Wow. Aren’t you a sight for sore eyes? It’s been a while since we’ve seen each other.
Think it was…that graduation party at-what was that guy’s name? Eh whatever.
Anyways I hope you doing alr-
Wait.
What are you doing?
Hey. Hey! No don’t come over here. Do not come over here. Donotdonotdonot-
“Oh my God hi!”
Great. Just great. Now we have to do this super awkward small talk.
I just wanted to get some toilet paper. Not reminisce about old crushes and crappy high school teachers.
“Are you kidding? Of course I remember him! You had the world’s hugest crush on him! Like massively huge! It was honestly a surprise that he didn’t know!”
Hold on. This is...actually fun?
I actually missed you a bunch. Man. We used to be such good friends. What happened?
“We should hang out sometime! Your number still the same?”
It sure is.
“Say it. Say to the sky.”
“…I’m a beautiful sunflower.”
“That’s not very convincing.”
“I’m a beautiful sunflower.”
“Gimme a bit more. More flourish.”
“I am a BEAUTIFUL SUNFLOWER.”
“That’s better. Keep going.”
“I am a BEAUTFUL SUNFLOWER and I will ALWAYS look for the sun!”
“And?”
“W-what do you mean and? Is there more? I didn’t know there was more.”
“’Of course there’s more. Did you not flip the card over?”
“…I was hoping you’d forget.”
“Well your hope has been squashed. Do it over.”
“Fine. I am a BEAUTIFUL SUNFLOWER and I will ALWAYS look for the sun! NO MATTER WHAT!”
“Wow. That was so powerful. I’m touched. I’m moved. The fist in the air was a nice touch.”
“Figured you’d like that. Now. Am I done? Or are we going to keep doing this until the sun sets?”
“What? Oh God no. Sunset’s in like six hours. I’ll burn to a crisp if we stay out here that long. Just say it like three more times so we can go back inside.”
When a ruler is broken, what do you do with it?
Still use it?
Sure, but it won’t quite measure the same anymore.
Centimetres gone.
Inches just a bit off.
The ruler is still functional but it’s not accurate.
Things will be missed.
“That’s fine! I can just guess and it’ll be fine!”
Until…
“I measured this and it’s not right! How was I so far off?”
Translation: You need a new ruler.
Now what else does this apply to?
Our justice system.
Now the US justice system works.
Kinda.
Sometimes.
Not Really.
Much like a broken ruler,
the system is missing some marks.
Gross punishments for minor offenses.
Murdered for selling cigarettes.
Murdered for having a broken taillight.
Little to No punishments for grave crimes.
Three months for rape.
Found not guilty for murdering someone walking home.
So yeah our justice system functions.
But it needs to be accurate.
Correct.
Translation: Our Justice System is broken.
And it needs to be replaced.
Because trying to “fix it” hasn’t really been working well has it?
“What would you do if you had a million dollars?”
Answer: The same thing I do now, just on a bigger scale.
Hang out with my friends.
Now we’re going on a real nice trip because I can afford it.
Donate to schools.
I’m going to buy as many laptops as I can.
Buy clothes.
Nothing designer though because let’s be real with ourselves.
A lot of designer stuff is…you know.
(Ugly)
Love my momma.
By paying her bills and buying her a house.
Because I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for her.
So yeah. That’s what I’d do.
I think we should let people be stupid more often. Not like complete, life ending moments of stupidity. Just like small ones here and there. You really learn a lot when you’re stupid and ignorant about something. It’s okay to not know something. Don’t let people make you feel like it’s not okay to know things. Again small things. We all feel stupid sometimes. It’s natural. Nobody knows everything. I didn’t know I was mispronouncing original until I was like thirteen. Whoops.
A friendly tip: If someone makes you feel stupid, just shut them down with something they’re stupid about.
Sic itur ad astra. Thus you shall go to the stars. And you will my Brother. As long as you continue to push forwards and upwards. Serve humbly. Love openly. Never turn your back on someone in need. Look in front of you. Remember the words of those that came before us.
That stand in front of you.
Build upon their lessons. Be better than them. You have it in you.
“But what if I don’t reach the stars?”
You will. In some way. Look behind you.
The next generation have you. But do you have them?
Have you left them the tools they need?
Did you encourage them, like someone did for you?
Will you let them go so they may do the work you cannot anymore?
You can still guide from afar you know.
Now. With that said. Go on. Reach for the stars.
But don’t forget to look up every once in a while,
Because how can you reach for the stars if you never do?
“I love you Ariel.”
A dark pair of eyes looked down at the angel in her lap. Ariel didn’t want to acknowledge the feeling of terror in the pit of her stomach when she heard the words.
“Ariel?”
She snapped out of her thoughts, rubbing the angel’s head gently.
“I love you too Cassiel,” she whispered.
Not that it made any kind of difference. It sounded like she was yelling.
This Place was just so quiet. At first it felt peaceful to Ariel. But now it felt suffocating.
She didn’t know how this got in this situation.
Yes she did.
“Good afternoon Driver! Where would you like to go today?”
A man sighs deeply as he gets comfortable in his car seat.
“Ah nowhere special. Just home,” he answers his GPS system. “Been a long day and I’m ready to go.”
“Very well. Home it is,” responds the robotic voice. “Would you like to take your usual route or would you like an alternate route?”
“No alternative routes today. Just straight home.”
“Very well Driver.”
The man sits back and enjoys his ride. It’s been a few minutes when his GPS system says,
“Estimated arrival time: 10 years…and fifteen minutes.”
“Don’t do it.”
“I’m going to do it.”
“Diane seriously. Don’t.”
“I already hit him and he’s out cold. It’s fine. I’ll consider it a payment for wasting my time.”
“…you can’t take the man’s gloves Diane.”
“B-but he’s passed out! He won’t miss ‘em!”
“He’s passed out because you hit him with a BRICK. The least you can do is not take his stuff.”
“Have you SEEN those gloves? They’re white leather! The good expensive kind! I don’t care what you say Jenn, I’m taking them.”
“Diane.”
“Sorry Jenna. Can’t hear you. Too busy taking this man’s gloves.”
“…fine. Grab the watch too while you’re at it. It’s nice.”
“See? Doesn’t it feel so much better that this turned out to be a bust now that we’ve got some decent gear?”
“I’m not justifying us robbing an unconscious man. It’s so wrong.”
“What if I told you he deserved getting robbed? Would that make you feel better my righteous moral compass of a sister?”
“Yes. Yes it would.”
“Very well then. He uhh…kicked a little kid selling lemonade on the side of the road.”
“Diane!”
Look at you. Top of your game. Nothing can stop you.
Except yourself.
But something’s not quite right. What is it?
You can have anything you want, so what’s causing that look in your eyes?
All I know is that it’s something I’ll never understand.
You could tell me.
But you won’t.
That’s alright. Wouldn’t make a difference.
I still wouldn’t understand.
You always ask about me, what makes me tick.
But when the role’s reversed, you freeze.
Like you aren’t expecting someone to do the same. Why?
Who have you been around that makes you feel that way?
It’s been years and years.
Over ten years and I still don’t fully get you.
Whatever. I’m starting to think you’re enjoying this.
So go ahead.
Smoke your cigarette with that carefree smile you always have.
With those eyes that look like they’ve seen far too much.
I’ll see you again real soon. SCSS.
